Abstract
In my essay, How should we be expected to communicate, my goal was to read Young’s essay in relation to Canagarajah’s insights in order to consider how and why Young attempts to revise and inspire other to revise the contextual expectations for speaking and writing within the many settings of today’s society. I begin by examining the context and target audiences of both Canagarajah and Young’s works. After situating the works, I examined how and why Canagarajah vastly accepts the set forth contextual expectation. Then I move on to how Young is not satisfied with the contextual expectations and seeks to revise them. I spend the rest of my paper examining how Young revises these standards and what he hopes to accomplish by doing so.
